One of the major problems faced by Bangladesh -- as with most developing countries -- is transportation. Other than air transport, the easiest way to travel north and south in Bangladesh is by water. The three great rivers, Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna, and their multitude of tributaries slice the flat country from north to south. Going east or west, however, is a different story. The roads must cross the rivers, and in most cases the way they cross is by ferry. Thus, transport of goods from east to west by truck can be slow and costly. The Agency for International Development has helped ease a part of this problem by financing the construction of bridges along the important Dacca-Aricha Highway. The Bangshi bridge on the Dacca-Aricha Highway is one of several constructed with the financial assistance of AID.
