Faced with a population explosion which threatens to wipe out economic gains, the Indian government has given high priority to a massive family planning program. It aims at reducing the birth rate from 41 per thousand to 25 per thousand within a decade. The U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) is providing financial and technical assistance to the burgeoning program. In fiscal 1969, for instance, AID plans to expand its family planning dollar assistance to $7.4 million. In addition, AID will contribute to Indian family planning $22 million in ruppees earned through the sale of U.S. food in India. Calcutta is a city of congestion and poverty, but the individual Indian - possibly through his philosophy and religion - maintains an inner peace and dignity of a simple level.
