Maj. Gen. Lester Simpson, commanding general of the 36th Infantry Division, receives the Purple Heart Medal of Pfc. James T. Hull from retired Command Sgt. Maj. Cecil Hull during a ceremony on July 24, 2015. Pfc. Hull was killed in action during the 36th Infantry Division’s Salerno Beach Landing during World War II. He received the medal posthumously, but it had been lost for several years. The non-profit organization Purple Hearts Reunited coordinated the return of the medal, which will now be placed on the wall of the division’s headquarters building thanks to the generosity of the Hull family.
