EDINBURG, Texas (Oct. 8, 2015) Edinburg, Texas native and Navy Reservist, Builder 3rd Class Carolyn McEwen with Naval Construction Mobile Battalion-22, Fort Worth, Texas, monitors one of the Navy’s robotics modules during the Middle School Challenge held at the 2015 Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology Week (HESTEC) on the campus of the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). McEwen, along with Sailors of Navy Recruiting District San Antonio, greeted thousands of middle school students who participated in hands-on activities provide by the U.S. Navy (STEM Tour II, SeaPerch) which taught them about different exciting areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). HESTEC Week is an educational conference that features events geared towards promoting STEM education to people of all ages and backgrounds.
