An Air Force Reserve pararescueman descends into the Atlantic Ocean from an Air Force C-17 Globemaster III in an effort to recover a NASA astronaut as part of an exercise Jan. 14 off the shore of Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The 45th Operations Group Detachment 3 joined NASA's Commercial Crew Program and Air Force pararescuemen, combat rescue officers and survival, evasion, resistance and escape specialists to simulate to practice recovering astronauts quickly and safely in the event they would need to abort their spacecraft. The small Air Force detachment has served as the liaison between NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, the Air Force and Department of Defense for more than 55 years, training men and women of those organizations for launch contingencies and astronaut recovery.
