Cody Kelly, NASA crew survival engineer, Dustin Gohmert, NASA crew survival engineering lead, and exercise participants test radio connectivity with a 45th Operations Group Detachment 3 Joint Space Operations Center from a vessel in the Atlantic Ocean during a NASA astronaut recovery exercise Jan. 14. Their goal was to verify radio transmission and reception distances between the airborne aircraft and the astronaut in the water. Detachment 3, the Department of Defense's Human Space Flight Support Office, is the only Air Force staff that coordinates and trains personnel to support human spaceflight contingencies. Detachment 3 supports all NASA human spaceflight missions, including Soyuz, Commercial Crew, and Orion, and consists of Air Force and Navy military and civilian personnel from a wide variety of specialties.
