Staff Sgt. Kevin Groff, a crew chief with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 466, Marine Aircraft Group 40, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan, loads a side-door-mounted M2 .50 caliber machine gun on a CH-53E "Super Stallion" helicopter as the aircraft takes off for a seven-hour flight Jan. 29. During the flight, Groff served as an aerial observer to provide the pilots with awareness of possible threats on the ground and provide fire support if needed when entering or exiting a landing zone.
