JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- Sgt. Alexandra Flores, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 297th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, digs out a field-expedient snow shelter, April 3, 2016, in a field near Barrow. With ambient temperatures of 5 below and gusting winds of 50 mph, the shelters were effective in blocking wind and providing relative warmth owing to ground heat.
