Daniel Cooper, 13, of Serrano Middle School in Highland, California, and Loralei, 12, of Walter Reed Middle School in Los Angeles, get in some last-minute studying before delivering their speeches for the California Cadet Corps’ Individual Major Awards (IMA) competition April 9 at the California National Guard’s Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB) Los Alamitos. The Orange County base hosted more than 300 youths in grades 5-12 that day for the IMA and the State Drill Competition, which are annual highlights for the Cadet Corps, a Cal Guard-run leadership-development program that dates to 1911.
