AT SEA – Marines with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit provide security off the port side of the USS Makin Island (LHD 8) with an M240B during a defense of the amphibious taskforce drill during a straits transit exercise July 14, 2016. The drill consisted of Marines and sailors taking up security positions around the ship due to simulated unidentified vessels approaching the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group/11th MEU. The drill was designed to familiarize Marines and sailors with their security positions, communications and procedures should a possible threat approach the ARG/MEU during a straits transit. PHIBRON 5 and the 11th MEU are participating in the Amphibious Squadron – Marine Expeditionary Unit Integration, which is their first at-sea exercise in their training workup cycle before their upcoming Western Pacific deployment 16-2 later this year.
