NORFOLK, Va (Aug. 5, 2016) Chief petty officer (CPO) selectees ask permission from USS Bataan (LHD 5), Commanding Officer, Capt. Eric Pfister, to commission the CPO 365 training ship, USS Tomich, during a ceremony aboard the ship. The Tomich will join the other six ships already incorporated into CPO 365 training and will be the lead ship until the chief pinning ceremony September 16. CPO 365 is a year-round training initiative that Chiefs Messes throughout the Navy take on to prepare first class petty officers to become chiefs. The USS Tomich is named after Chief Watertender Peter Tomich, who gave his life to save his shipmates aboard the USS Utah during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941.
