Local residents from Diyara and surrounding areas in southern Baghdad and northern Babil provinces held elections Aug. 12 to select councilmen for the Diyara Agricultural Union. The union was dysfunctional since the fall of Saddam, but Soldiers from Company D, 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, along with the local government, revitalized interest in the AG union. After two months of planning and coordination, the elections were held and validated by a representative from the Ministry of Agriculture. The board members will decide the direction of the union and resource allocations to the approximately 1,200 farmers in the region.
