Kurt Philion, currently of Mahnomen, Minn., carries the United States flag as he runs through the rain in the Fargo Marathon, May 22, Fargo, N.D. Philion carries the U.S. flag the entire distance as he runs in marathons and half-marathons in memory of fallen military members, including his best friend from high school Sgt. Corey Rystad of Red Lake Falls, Minn. Rystad was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq in 2006. Philion also runs in marathons to raise money for Project New Hope, an organization that helps soldiers readjust to life after returning from war.
