160901-N-LD343-003 SAN PEDRO, California (Sept. 1, 2016) – Rear Adm. James S. Bynum, commander, Carrier Strike Group 9, poses for a photo with chefs Steve Samson and Mei Lin as they prepare to judge the first cooking competition "Galley Wars" at a TV pre-recording held on board Battleship Iowa Memorial, during the inaugural Los Angeles Fleet Week. This year the amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6) competes with mine countermeasure ship USS Champion (MCM 4), Coast Guard Base Los Angeles/Long Beach, and Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108). Fleet week offers the public an opportunity to tour ships, meet Sailors, Marines, and members of the Coast Guard and gain a better understanding of how the sea service support the national defense of the United States and freedom of the seas.
