LOS ANGELES – Culinary specialists from Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108), amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6), mine countermeasure ship USS Champion (MCM 4) and Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles squared off on the fantail of Battleship Iowa Memorial for a TV recording of the culinary competition “Galley Wars,” Sept. 1, during the inaugural Los Angeles Fleet Week.
The steel beach-style competition challenged the four teams to create their own unique style of hamburger, along with two side dishes and a dessert. Guest judges for the event were Rear Adm. James S. Bynum, commander, Carrier Strike Group 9; Chef Mei Lin, winner of Bravo TV’s Top Chef Season 1; and Chef Steve Samson, founder of LA’s award-winning Sotto Restaurant.
As the competition took off, competitors fired up their grills and began putting together their masterpieces. Meyer’s team prepared an Adobo-style hamburger, following a popular, traditional Filipino recipe. Culinary Specialist 1st Class Danilo Aungon and Culinary Specialist 1st Class Filmar Roguel, both originally from the Philippines, decided it would be a unique recipe that would surprise all three judges.
“It’s a different taste that most people are not used to. We are sure that the judges are going to love it,” Aungon said.
Aungon was right. At the end of the competition, judges named Wayne E. Meyer as the “Galley Wars” champion and awarded them an engraved spatula trophy and bragging rights.
Los Angeles Fleet Week celebrates and honors the nation’s sea services, facilitates annual disaster preparedness training between the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and local first responders, and offers the public an opportunity to tour ships and interact with Service members to gain a better understanding of how maritime forces support national defense and freedom of the seas.
U.S. 3rd Fleet leads naval forces in the Eastern Pacific from the West Coast of North America to the international date line and provides the realistic, relevant training necessary for an effective global Navy.
