    III Marine Expeditionary Force

Newly promoted Chief Petty Officers march across the stage during a chief officer pinning ceremony Sept. 16 on Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. Families, fellow service members and civilians gathered to watch 35 sailors get promoted during the ceremony. The rank of chief petty officer was established on April 1, 1893. The letters “USN” on the anchor rank insignia stand for unity, service and navigation. The promotion to chief petty officer occurs every year during the month of September.
