A recruit from Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, is instructed to respond louder during pick up at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, Sept. 23. Pick up is the first encounter the recruits have with the drill instructors who are charged with the responsibility of transforming the recruits into basically-trained Marines. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Kilo Company is scheduled to graduate Dec. 16.
