During the ceremony Mabus announced that the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, DDG 121, will be named the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., in honor of the Marine Corps lieutenant general who was the first African-American Marine Corps aviator and Marine Corps general officer. Petersen was the first African-American Marine Corps aviator and general officer. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1988 after 38 years of service.
