A “survivor” of a train crash, caused by a high-magnitude earthquake in Southern California, is helped out of the wreckage by an extraction team from the California Air National Guard’s 129th Air Rescue Wing Nov. 17 during Vigilant Guard 17, a training exercise conducted by the California National Guard and other local, state and federal emergency agencies. Vigilant Guard is an annual exercise sponsored by U.S. North Command and the National Guard Bureau. Army and Air elements of California’s reserve force are using Vigilant Guard as preparation for a mass-casualty event. This year’s event is hosted by the Nevada and California National Guard and partners several dozens of state, local and federal agencies to test capabilities and procedures should a disaster occur in the two states.
