Maj. Chris Backus, a pilot-physician, checks a patient at the flight medicine clinic on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, March 9, 2016. Pilot-physicians are involved in the research, development, testing, and evaluation of new and current Air Force systems and missions. Because of unique medical and human factors qualifications, pilot-physicians are particularly well suited to help develop new aircraft, life support equipment, and avionics or software upgrades.
