Lance Cpl. Gary Lam, 19, a combat engineer from Rosemead, Calif., uses a Gizmo mine detector to sweep for improvised explosive devices during IED lane training. Marines with Mobility Assault Company, 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, practiced clearing routes of IEDs in preparation for their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. Once in country, they will be responsible for making sure roads are free of IEDs to allow coalition forces to travel safely.
