Members from the Hawaii Air National Guard’s 169th Air Defense Squadron travel through the access road entrance to Mt. Ka’ala Air Force Station, Aug. 12, 2016, Oahu, Hawaii. Every 24-hours a new set of team members travels the dangerous road that leads to the top of the mount, which is home to radar equipment that is used to monitor the airspace around the Hawaiian Islands. Because of the quickly changing weather and the microclimates at various elevations throughout the mountain range, traveling the relatively short road often takes hours, and sometimes is rendered impassable.
