U.S. 5TH FLEET AREA OF OPERATIONS (Dec. 9, 2016) U.S. Marine Sgt. Chandler Bird, a main battle tank repair technician, performs maintenance on an M1A1 main battle tank during Exercise Alligator Dagger, Dec. 9. Tank maintenance is done to identify and correct deficiencies or degraded equipment to keep them ready for operational use. Alligator Dagger serves to sustain combat proficiency across the range of military operations. The unilateral exercise provides an opportunity for the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and 11th MEU to train in amphibious operations within the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
