A U.S. Marine with Company C, Battalion landing Team 1st Bn., 4th Marines, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), sights in on his weapon during a helo-borne raid during Exercise Alligator Dagger at a undisclosed location, Dec. 21, 2016. During the exercise, the 11th MEU had the opportunity to exercise as an entire sea-based Marine Air-Ground Task Force, enhancing its combat power and proficiency while operating in U.S. 5th Fleet. The helo-borne raid was the culminating event of the exercise, launching Marines from the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8), onto an opposed objective before returning to naval shipping. The unilateral exercise provides an opportunity for the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group and 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit to train in amphibious operations within the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
