Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command Oscar Team members, Marine Capt. Ernest Nordman (left) and Marine Staff Sgt. Kurt Witt, an explosive ordinance device specialist check for metal pieces from possible bomb fragmentations at a site in the Betio Village of Tarawa, Republic of Kiribati, on Aug. 9. Nordman's team is in Tarawa to recover remains of Marines from the Battle of Tarawa, which took place in November of 1943 during WWII. 1,113 Marines assigned to the 2nd Marine Division were killed and 2,290 were wounded.
