Taking advantage of having all their Marines in one place, Lt. Col. Michael Mooney, and Sgt. Maj. James Porterfield, commanding officer and sergeant major of 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, formed all their men up for a battalion photo, aboard Camp Leatherneck, Sept. 23. Going on operations for weeks and months at a time, the Recon Marines haven’t had many occasions where they could all come together. Almost half way through their 7-month deployment, this could possibly be their last time together until redeployment back to Camp Pendleton, Calif. They also held a Purple Heart ceremony for two of their Marines, and a barbeque with hamburgers and hotdogs for lunch. “I am very proud of the fortitude and discipline they display on a daily basis, and am very blessed to walk among men such as these,” Mooney said. “On the battlefield, as in all areas of their life, they stand tall above the competition.”
