Lt. Col. Michael Mooney, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion commanding officer, helped dish out hamburgers and hotdogs to his Marines during a barbeque, held at their motor pool aboard Camp Leatherneck, Sept. 23. The Recon Marines are constantly ‘outside of the wire’ conducting missions throughout Helmand province, so Mooney and his sergeant major, Sgt. Maj. James Porterfield, realized they may not get the chance to have all their men in one place again during their 7-month deployment, and wanted to reward the Marines, with the backyard style meal. They also held a Purple Heart ceremony for two of their Marines, just prior to the meal. “I am very proud of the fortitude and discipline they display on a daily basis, and am very blessed to walk among men such as these,” Mooney said. “On the battlefield, as in all areas of their life, they stand tall above the competition.”
