A Marine advisor from the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command watches Senegalese and Malian special forces counter-terrorism units silently and carefully maneuver to come into view of the objective, an abandoned two-story building with a tower providing the “enemy” a commanding view of the area. The scenario conducting operations in an urban terrain environment here was part of Exercise Flintlock 10. The military training engagement, part of Exercise Flintlock 10, was led by MARSOC and focused on unit patrols, urban terrain scenarios and CT operations. While the objective of military training engagements in the Trans-Saharan region is to develop capacities of African counter-terrorism units, U.S. SOF teams are able to hone their skills in various combat proficiencies such as demolitions, crew-served weapons and other battle skills. Flintlock 10 is a special operations forces exercise focused on military interoperability and capacity-building and is part of an AFRICOM-sponsored annual exercise program with partner nations in Northern and Western Africa. The exercise provides military training opportunities to foster relationships of peace, security and cooperation in Africa through the Trans-Sahara Counterterrorism Partnership program.
