A French-speaking Marine advisor from the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command discusses a recent assault exercise with the leaders of an African special forces unit during a military training engagement here. The event focused on unit patrols, urban terrain scenarios and CT operations. While the objective of military training engagements in the Trans-Saharan region is to develop capacities of African counter-terrorism units, U.S. SOF teams are able to hone their skills in various combat proficiencies such as demolitions, crew-served weapons and other battle skills. Flintlock 10 is a special operations forces exercise focused on military interoperability and capacity-building and is part of an AFRICOM-sponsored annual exercise program with partner nations in Northern and Western Africa. The exercise provides military training opportunities to foster relationships of peace, security and cooperation in Africa through the Trans-Sahara Counterterrorism Partnership program.
