WATERS OFF THE COAST OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (Apr. 11, 2017) The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83) fires its Mark 45 5-inch gun during an integrated live-fire exercise. Howard is currently underway conducting a composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX) with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in preparation for an upcoming deployment. COMPTUEX tests the mission readiness of the strike group's assets through simulated real-world scenarios and their ability to perform as an integrated unit.
