PACIFIC OCEAN (April 20, 2017) Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Randolph Waddy, right, from Live Oak, Fla., and 3rd Class Wesley Edwards, from Fort Smith, Ark., direct an SA-330J Puma helicopter to deliver supplies to the flight deck of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) during a vertical replenishment with the dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Richard E. Byrd (T-AKE 4). Makin Island, the flagship for the Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is operating in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to enhance amphibious capability with regional partners and to serve as a ready-response force for any type of contingency.
