FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The II Marine Expeditionary Force leadership, Maj. Gen. Walter L. Miller Jr., Sgt. Maj. Richard D. Thresher and Command Master Chief Russell W. Folley, stand with a group of Marines on May 5, 2017 near a porthole on the USS New York that provides a viewpoint to a sheet of steel from the World Trade Center. The USS New York, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, was named after the state of New York and has many reminders of the September 11 attacks; including a fire fighters jacket from one of the men who were on scene. The ship's motto, which is "Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget." is engraved into the sheet of steel. The ship is docked in Port Everglades, Fla., during Fleet Week Port Everglades . II MEF provided the Marines participating in fleet week. During his tour Miller ensured he spoke to each Marine he came across. Miller is the commanding general of II MEF; Thresher is the sergeant major of II MEF; and Folley is the command master chief of II MEF. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Staff Sgt. Rebekka S.
