NEWPORT, R.I.
(May 5, 2017)
Family and friends of Navy SEAL Lt. Brendan Looney gather at the plaque officially dedicating the Naval Academy Preparatory School’s (NAPS) central plaza to Lt. Looney, of Owings, Md., a member of the NAPS class of 2000 and a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy in 2004. Looney was killed in action during combat operations on Sept. 21, 2010 in the Zabul province of Afghanistan when the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter he was flying in crashed. Located between Ripley and Perry Halls at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, the plaza is the heart of the NAPS campus. The NAPS battalion holds formations there multiple times each day and every NAPS midshipmen candidate passes through the plaza several hundred times during their 10 months in Newport. Looney’s personal core values: be strong, be accountable, never complain; will provide daily inspiration to the future Navy and Marine Corps leaders who are beginning their careers at NAPS.
