U.S. CENTCOM Command Sgt. Maj. William F. Thetford congratulates outgoing Sergeant Major of the Armed Forces Sgt. Maj. Mohamed Ismail al-Smadi following the first change of responsibility ceremony in the history of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) on May 14, 2017, in Amman, Jordan. Smadi will become the first noncommissioned officer commandant of the JAF NCO Academy, a position previously held by brigadier generals or colonels. Both the ceremony, and new position, highlight the continued professionalization of the JAF NCO corps and demonstrate the increasing leadership roles and responsibility NCOs are taking in the JAF. “This shifting will help the military change the mindset of what NCOs can do,” said Smadi.
