In the dead of night, mortar platoon Soldiers from Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, load an illumination round into a mortar to light the way for their fellow soldiers maneuvering in the forest below, May 24, 2017 at Grafenwoehr Training Area, Germany. Illumination rounds provide better visuals for light infantry units at night as they engage an enemy, and mortar units are also capable of delivering explosive and smoke shells suitable for providing concealment.
