DUTCH HARBOR, Alaska (Aug. 24, 2017) The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sherman (WHEC720), escorts the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Kentucky (SSBN 737) out of Broad Bay in Dutch Harbor, Alaska after a Brief Stop for Provisions. Kentucky is one of eight ballistic-missile submarines stationed at Naval Base Kitsap. SSBNs are the most survivable assets of the Triad, providing a sea-based missile launch capability and survivability that stabilizes deterrent relationships and renders surprise attacks inconceivable.
