POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, HAWAII -- Lance Cpl. Jeremy Collins, a squad leader with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, checks his squad members’ ear protection before a platoon live-fire event at Pohakuloa Training Area Aug. 31, 2017. The training event, a part of Exercise Bougainville II, consisted of a platoon-size force breaching through a concertina wire obstacle, then assaulting multiple enemy positions with notional support from 60 mm mortars and a machine gun emplacement. Exercise Bougainville II prepares 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment for service as a forward deployed force in the Pacific by training them to fight as a ground combat element in a Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
