POHAKULOA TRAINING AREA, HAWAII -- Lance Cpl. Richard Young, a combat engineer with Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, pulls in a grappling hook attached to a section of a concertina wire obstacle during a platoon live-fire event at Pohakuloa Training Area, Aug. 22, 2017. The training event, a part of Exercise Bougainville II, consisted of a platoon-size force breaching through the obstacle, then assaulting multiple enemy positions with notional support from 60 mm mortars and a machine gun emplacement. Exercise Bougainville II prepares 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment for service as a forward deployed force in the Pacific by training them to fight as a ground combat element in a Marine Air-Ground Task Force.
