LOS ANGELES (SEPT. 6, 2017) Sailors attached to Avenger-class mine countermeasure ship USS Champion (MCM 4) use tending lines to steady the Klein 5,000, a side-scan sonar device used to survey the ocean floor, as it is lowered into the water by an articulating crane during launch operations on the Champion fantail while off the coast of Southern California. The evolution allowed the Champion to use sonar technology in order to develop an understanding of the seabed topography. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Curtis D.
