LOS ANGELES (SEPT. 6, 2017) Sailors assigned to Avenger-class mine countermeasure ship USS Champion (MCM 4) perform maintenance on the Klein 5,000, a side-scan sonar device used to survey the ocean floor, following a successful recovery operation on the Champion fantail during an underway off the coast of Southern California. The evolution allowed the Champion to use sonar technology in order to develop an understanding of the seabed topography. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Curtis D.
