    U.S. Army Sgt. Damarlly Drummond, a New York City native and medic, 602nd Area Support Medical Company, 261st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, 44th Medical Brigade, Fort Bragg, N.C., and U.S. Air Force Capt. Paul Wheeler, a Centerville, Utah native, and critical care nurse, 595th Inpatient Operations Squadron, 95th Medical Wing, Joint Base San Antonio - Fort Sam Houston, Texas, load bags on the back of a military vehicle at the Cyril E. King Airport, Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Sept. 16, 2017. The Air Force surgical medical team is augmenting the soldiers of the 602nd ASMC to provide triage, a variety of medical treatments, and pre-evacuation care after Hurricane Irma caused major damage to the local hospital. The Department of Defense conducts Defense Support of Civil Authorities operations to assist civilian responders in saving lives, relieving human suffering and mitigating property damage in response to a catastrophic disaster.
