Alan Vanmarter, chief damage controlman, assigned to the amphibious transport dock landing ship USS Whidbey Island assists the embarked 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit with the proper use and wear of the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus on the ships flight deck. The SCBA provides service members with breathable oxygen in case of a shipboard fire. The ship is deployed as part of the USS Bataan Amphibious Ready Group which deployed ahead of its original schedule in order to relieve units from the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group in the Mediterranean Sea.
