Maj. Joseph Campomanes and Maj. Travis Zimmerman of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, look over a map in San Juan, Puerto Rico Oct. 15, 2017. They are some of the handful of Marines responsible for coordinating with Joint Force Lance Component Command in San Juan, to provide MEU planning coordination for operations such as route reconnaissance, airlift capabilities and supply movement. As Marines deploy on and around Puerto Rico, these Marines have eyes on the big picture and a direct line to the MEU and task force commanders in order to support the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico’s and the U.S. Virgin Island’s government effort in saving lives, minimizing human suffering, and stabilizing the situation following the damage caused by Hurricane Maria.
