Soldiers assigned to the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), practice hand grenade skills during patrol lane training in preparation for earning their Expert Infantryman Badge on Fort A.P. Hill, Va., Oct. 24, 2017. Since 1943, the EIB has been awarded to Soldiers with Infantry or Special Forces Military Occupational Specialties. Earning an EIB requires completion of a number of prerequisites and passing a battery of tests on basic infantry skills. These skills include day and night land navigation, first aid, patrol lane tasks, and moving under direct fire. One of the last tests is a 12-mile foot march, which must be completed in three hours.
