A perfect example of the enduring spirit of Puerto Rico: This tree, located in a popular pedestrian area in Old San Juan, was uprooted by Hurricane Maria, then cut to remove the trunks, branches and crown. Its roots remain in tact and an artist has painted the Puerto Rican flag over them, creating a symbolic message of hope and strength. It seems to say, "We've been knocked down, but our roots remain — Puerto Rico, se levanta! (Puerto Rico rises!)"
