PACIFIC OCEAN (Dec. 21, 2017) - A hoist operator lowers an external sling from an Agusta AW109SP helicopter to the flight deck of the submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40), to retrieve a member of the Columbia River Bar Pilots after the ship completed its transit down the Columbia River following a scheduled dry-dock phase maintenance availability in Portland, Ore, Dec. 21. The ship will soon be conducting sea trials, which constitutes the final determination of a ship’s ability to rejoin the fleet as an operational unit to conduct maintenance and support of submarines and surface vessels deployed to the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
