U.S. Army Sgt. Edward Novak, a team chief with A Company, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Task Force Duke, and a native of Nashville, N.C., removes an object from the claw, which is used to investigate improvised explosive devices, during a route clearance patrol, May 23 in Khowst province, Afghanistan. The purpose of the route clearance patrol is to clear IEDs to allow other units in the province freedom of movement. With only two route clearance companies assigned to the 3 BCT, 1 Inf. Div., the Soldiers are constantly busy ensuring the routes are clear of possible dangers.
