The photograph of New York National Guard Pvt 1st Class Edward "Monk" Eastman, from the photographic roster of the 106th Infantry Regiment in World War I. Eastman was a gangster who joined the Brooklyn-based National Guard regiment and became a hero to his fellow Soldiers for his bravery under fire. He was one of the 106th Infantry Regiment Soldiers who crossed to France on the U.S.S. President Lincoln before the ship was sunk by a submarine. ( Photo from the New York State Military Museum)
