    II Marine Expeditionary Force   

    CAMP HANSON, Helmand province, Afghanistan -- Macon, Ga., native Sgt. Stephen M. Smith, the armory maintenance chief for 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, survived an improvised explosive device blast in Ramadi, Iraq, while deployed with 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment in 2006. Despite the loss of his left leg below the knee, Smith deployed to Afghanistan in February.
