A new recruit with Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, makes his initial phone call home, reading only what is printed in front of him, during receiving at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, April 30. The next time recruits will be able to contact their loved ones will be by postal mail. Their initial letter home should be expected within 2-3 weeks upon arrival. Annually, more than 17,000 males recruited from the Western Recruiting Region are trained at MCRD San Diego. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate July 27.
